A paper?you can check to see if an argument is sound in two steps.? First, you convert it symbols and look at the relevant truth tables.? (Make sure that you point out what you are looking for on the relevant truth tables.)? Second, if it is valid, you must look at each premise to figure out whether it is true.

You are also going to point out a special little trick for seeing if something is valid.? Hint:? is has something to do with logical equivalence.?

So, here is how I would proceed, following Dr. Kelsey?s outline.

1. (If you want an introduction)? Start by pointing out that truth tables can definitely show us whether an argument is valid, and also help us find out whether the sentences are true.?
2. Translation
   • Mention that you are going to put the sample argument into logical form, and do it.? (Don?t explain the steps by which you translate it ? just give the translation the way that Dr. Kelsey describes.)
3. Validity
   • Very briefly explain what a truth table is, and note that we use it to check out whether or not the argument is sound.
   • Give the big truth table.
   • Give a rough sketch of how we use the truth table to determine whether it is valid.? (What exactly are we looking for on the truth table, and what does it have to do with validity.)
   • Point out that we can take a shortcut and why. ?(If you haven't figured out what that shortcut is, e-mail me!? I gave you a hint earlier.)
   • Point out the interesting facts that this case illustrates (remind the person of what it means for a pair of statements to be consistent.)
4. Premises
   1. Go through each premise and the conclusion, and explain why it is true or false.? Use the format demonstrated in the document ?Discussing Premises in Propositional Arguments? on Blackboard.)
5. Soundness
   • Explain what features of the argument shows us that the conclusion is valid, but not sound
