PHI 100: Introduction to Philosophy
Module 5 Homework Assignment
Directions: For this assignment, you will be writing an argumentative essay comparing two of
the theorists that we have covered thus far. You will begin by choosing two of the following
philosophers to discuss: Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, or Kant. Then you will explain each
theorist?s views regarding knowledge and how it is acquired. After you have established each
theorist?s views, you will then explain which theorist provides the most plausible view and why.
Finally, you will explain why it is important that one adopt the views of the theorist you choose
to discuss; in other words, what social implications might arise from taking, or not taking, this
point of view, and why is this important?
Structure: Your essay should begin with an introduction paragraph that introduces the topic to
your reader and contains a thesis statement. This thesis should explain which two theorists you
plan to discuss, which one you think gives a better response, and how you plan to demonstrate
this in your assignment. This section should be at least 100 words in length.
Next, you will provide a summary of each theorist?s views. For example, if you are comparing
Descartes and Locke, you will explain Descartes? views in one paragraph and Locke?s views in
another. EACH of these paragraphs should be at least 100 words in length.
After you have explained each philosophers views, you will explain which theorist you find most
convincing and why. It is not enough to simply say that you agree with the philosopher; you
need to explain why their theory gives the best explanation regarding how knowledge is gained.
Be careful to avoid making subjective claims; any claims in your essay must be supported with
quotes from the theorists or other reputable secondary sources. This section should be at least
150 words in length.
Finally, you will explain why it is important to adopt the views of the philosopher that you
defend; explain what important social implications come from this theory, and what problematic
consequences might arise if we do not adopt it. This section should be at least 100 words in
length.
Tips: The following are important things to keep in mind while completing this assignment.

Do not discuss religion. In an argumentative essay of this nature, your goal is to
convince your reader to adopt a certain view point. When you discuss religion, you
automatically exclude those readers who are either not religious or do not share your
particular religious views, leaving you convincing only those readers who already agree
with you. Instead, you need to use logical analysis and factual data to support your
points.
Start early and revise often. Even just one proofread can catch many unwanted errors in
your final draft which could make you lose points.
Use all resources available to you. The LIRN Library and Academic Resource Center are
two great places to start your research and to get help/feedback on your essay.
